Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas takes place in the year 1992, in the fictional state of San Andreas, which is based on the states of California and Nevada.

Players must also ensure that CJ eats to stay healthy, obtaining food from fast food restaurants such as Cluckin’ Bell, street vendors, restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. The balance between food and exercise affects his muscles and appearance. If CJ eats too much food in a short period of time, he will become sick and vomit; if he eats too much food periodically, he will gain weight and move more slowly when walking; if he does not eat, he will become less muscular and eventually lose health. San Andreas also features skills in areas such as driving, firearms handling, stamina, and lung capacity, which improve with use in the game. CJ can also learn three different styles of unarmed combat at gyms in each of the game’s three cities.

Another improvement to the game is the artificial intelligence. The player can no longer beat a pedestrian to death on a busy street in broad daylight without the pedestrians doing anything: while most pedestrians run away or hide, some armed civilians and hostile gang members will attack CJ, and friendly gang members will shoot at their opponents and chase him. This would make the aforementioned home invasions more difficult than one would expect because the occupants of the house will resist and in some cases pull out guns. There is also road rage, if the player hits a driver’s car (usually a taxi), they will get out and attack you, or they may try to completely destroy the player’s car.
The player can also voluntarily allow CJ to engage in dialogue with various walkers in the game, including drug dealers, potential girlfriends, and other gang members. CJ’s level of respect among his fellow Grove Street gang members varies based on his actions, as does his relationships with his girlfriends. Rockstar states that CJ has a total of about 4,200 lines of spoken dialogue.
A two-player co-op mode has also been added for PlayStation 2 and Xbox. There are two player icons at many key locations in the world of San Andreas. Placing a foot on one of these icons and pressing any button on a second controller initiates a series of special objectives similar to the “Rampage” in previous Grand Theft Auto games. Two human players will be able to ride in either a car or on foot. Both players must remain on the same screen and at a reasonable distance from each other.
