The single-player story is set in the fictional state of San Andreas, based on Southern California, and follows three protagonists: retired bank robber Michael De Santa (Ned Luke), street gangster Franklin Clinton (Sean Fontenot), and drug and arms dealer Trevor Phillips (Steven Ogg), as they attempt to commit heists under pressure from a corrupt government agency and powerful criminals. Players freely roam across the open world of San Andreas’ countryside and the fictional city of Los Santos, based on Los Angeles. The game’s world is explored on foot and by vehicle, from either a third-person or first-person perspective. Players control the protagonists during single-player mode and switch between them during and outside of missions. The story focuses on heist sequences, and many missions involve shooting and driving. The wanted system controls how aggressively law enforcement responds to players who commit crimes. In Grand Theft Auto Online, the game’s online multiplayer mode, up to 30 players participate in a variety of different cooperative and competitive game modes.

Grand Theft Auto V is an action-adventure game played from either a third-person or first-person perspective. Players complete missions in linear scenarios with specific objectives to advance the story. Outside of missions, players are free to roam the open world. The world consists of the open countryside of San Andreas, the fictional Blaine County, and the city of Los Santos, and is much larger in area than previous entries in the series. It can be fully explored after starting the game without restrictions, although story progression unlocks more gameplay content.
