A Beholder is an aberration consisting of a floating spherical body with a large fanged mouth, a single eye in front, and several flexible eye stalks on top. It is protected by chitinous plates.

Each Beholder eye possesses a different magical ability; the main eye projects an anti-magic cone, and the other eyes have various spell-like abilities (disintegrating objects, turning flesh to stone, causing sleep, slowing the movement of objects or beings, bewitching animals, bewitching humans, causing death, inducing fear, levitating objects, and causing serious injury). There are several different types of Beholder, such as “Watchers”, “Spectators”, “Eyes of the Deep”, “Old Celestials”, “Hive Mothers”, and “Death Tyrants”. Additionally, some rare Beholders can use their eyes for non-standard spell-like abilities; these transformed Beholders are often killed or banished by their peers. Beholders who wish to cast spells like regular mages forgo the traditional use of their eyes and turn off their central anti-magic eye, making these beholder mages instantly outcasts.

In the 4th edition, different races of beholders have different magical abilities. Blazing Eyes of Beholders only have Fear Rays, Fire Rays, and Telekinesis Rays; Frost Eyes are the same, with Fire Rays replaced by Frost Rays. Tyrannical Eyes of Beholders are largely unchanged from regular beholders, but the Death Ray deals continuous necrotic damage instead of instant death, and the Disintegration Ray does not automatically kill its target. Other types of beholders have their own set of skills. In this edition, the Central Eye of a beholder no longer negates magic, but instead stuns or grants some weakness to its victim

Society
Beholders are extremely xenophobic. They sometimes take members of other, non-beholder races as slaves; However, they will engage in violent intra-species warfare with others of their kind who differ even slightly in appearance. This intense hatred of other beholders is not universal; the most notable exceptions are the hive mothers, who use their mind-control abilities to form hives with other beholders and beholder kin. Beholder communities in the Underdark, when provoked, will often declare war on any and all nearby settlements, meeting the greatest resistance from the stupid and the bad.

Beholders worship their overbearing and mad goddess known as the Great Mother, though some also, or alternatively, follow her rebellious offspring, Gzimnid, the beholder god of gases.

Some beholder races have mutated away from the basic stock of beholders. These are the deviant beholders, of which there are many different types. These deviants may have different abilities and/or appearances, but the unifying characteristic among beholders and deviant beholders is a simple fleshy body with one or more hideous eyes.
